Kununurra (Monday 26th & Tuesday 27th April 2010)

After exploring the town centre and finding out about 'places to see and things to do' from the information centre we were on the road. We drove up to Kelly's Knob Lookout which gave views of Kununurra and surrounding areas. There were mango orchards as far as the eye could see. Unfortunately for Elizabeth who loves mango's the season was over so not a mango to be seen! We visited 2 rock galleries which had amazing ornaments, jewellery etc made out of 'zebra stone'. Yes, stripey rocks. Emilia and Elizabeth managed to buy a whole heap of beautiful tumbled stones found in the region off a lovely lady who seemed to like the girls and only charged them $2 for the lot. They thought all their Christmas's' had come at once. The car is being weighed down by Elizabeth's rock collection. We called into the Sandalwood Factory and the Hoochery Distillery.
We drove to the famous Ivanhoe Crossing which was one of the sights used in the film Australia.

The most exciting and scary experience (for me anyway), was driving down the Gibb River Road
to Emma Gorge. The road is unsealed and 4WD only for the majority of it. We would have liked to have gone as far as El Questro but due to poor road conditions because of wet weather we were given the OK to travel to Emma Gorge only. (Sorry Murph couldn't get to Zebedee Springs). We were the only 2WD on the road. Every other car we came across was a 4WD and after not too long I realised why! Driving through flooded river crossings in our car made me just a tad nervous. Anyway, once we climbed our way up to Emma Gorge the plunge pool and falls were spectacular. Yes, Pete and the girls had a swim of course. Emilia noticed the planes driving home from Emma Gorge and the red dirt airstrip along side of them. The only comment Emilia could make was "Oh well that's putting your whole life at risk!!" The airstrips are not what we're used to seeing.
