Alice Springs to Tennant Creek Northern Territory (Sunday 11th April 2010)

Travel Day.

We were on the road about 10.30 this morning after a supermarket stop to get supplies and a fuel stop. Just north of Alice we crossed The Tropic of Capricorn. We planned on stopping at a town called Ti Tree for lunch but as we approached the roadhouse the Aboriginals lying all about the place with stray dogs approaching anything that stood still made me say to Pete "keep going!". WE DID NOT STOP THE CAR. We drove on to a park just out of town away from the locals and had a very quick lunch before moving on. Due to the heavy rain falls in recent days we found stretches of road on the Hwy still under water.
There are always sights to see along the way and today we came across the Historic Barrow Telegraph Station. The old building was beautiful.
We arrived at Wycliffe Wells, The UFO capital of Australia at about 3.15pm. We took one look at The Big4 Caravan Park and decided it wasn't for us. The kids did take photo's with the 'Aliens' though, so they were pretty happy. (Petrol $1.78) It started to rain again. It was still raining when we arrived at The Devil's Marbles (Karlu Karlu), but it didn't lessen the impact of the sight of these huge rocks. Happily, we walked around the marbles in the rain, looking at their incredible size and reading about the Aboriginal story attached to them. We chatted to people in the car park on our way out who told us the road was pretty flooded up ahead and muddy as the red dirt has been washed on to the road. So go slow it was for us. Arrived at Tennant Creek at 5.00pm.
