Coober Pedy SA to Yulara NT (Saturday 3rd April 2010)

On the road at 6.15am (Yes, we forgot day light savings was over!)

One quick stop for breakfast at Cadney Roadhouse. Don’t order a coffee at this place, not if you want a real one anyway. Paid $3.00 for a coffee and you get handed a mug over the counter to make your own at the communal counter!! You can imagine how horrified Pete was. Not exactly what he had in mind. The fly’s are out in force. Thank God for fly nets. We stopped at Marla to get fuel. It was $1.60 litre. The fuel price is going up as we travel further north. Marla is the last South Australian town before we cross over into the Northern Territory. Bye-bye SA. Hello NT.

You see some of the weirdest sights traveling along the Hwy like a suspended Rhino on a steel pole in the middle of no-where. Go Figure. We crossed over the border into the Northern Territory at 10.53 am. The first thing we noticed was the speed limit is 130km unless sign posted then it drops down to 110km. The price of fuel at Kulgera is $1.65 litre. Told you it was going up.

Grant and Kath this is for you. Yep, the girls recognized these statues straight away from your photo album and yes; we took the mandatory photo shoot opportunity too.

The neighbours next to us at Coober Pedy were on the way to Yulara as well so we tag-teamed up the Hwy until we both pulled into Yulara together at 3pm. Lovely family from Geelong. Have told some very funny stories of their past trips. It’s all part of the adventure they keep telling us. The good, the bad and the ugly. We haven’t had too much bad or ugly yet.

Arriving closer to Yulara we thought Mt Connor was Uluru from a distance because of the sheer size of it and then read the sign on the side of the road and realized it wasn’t and felt really silly. As we got closer we realized it wasn’t the right shape but still amazing to look at. Once we got to our camp site we set up and then walked 100 mtrs over the sand dunes behind us to be faced with Uluru. The most breath taking sight I’ve seen in a long time. The excitement was too much! We went back at sunset 6.46pm to photograph the rock and The Olgas of course, which were just to our right! I can’t tell you how amazing this place is. Can’t wait for tomorrow.
